Resawing Process

This is a process for resawing a split billet into material for harp soundboards.

  • Plane just enough to totally clean up. Measure after planing so I can calculate kerf loss.
  • Cut board to 48” length or whatever works but not much longer than that.
  • Joint both edges.
  • 1/2”, 3 TPI, Hook Tooth, Moderate Raker Set. Olson Blade. Tighten saw blade well past the flutter point.
  • Tall flat fence
  • Use roller stand 22±” from blade.
  • To produce boards that clean-up completely at >1/4”:
    • Mark lines at 5/16”, both edges, both sides.
    • Set fence at 5/16”
  • Cut full length, backing off every few inches to allow the blade to align if necessary.
  • Maintain pressure toward bottom edge of board. Pressure too high on the board may tilt the fence and/or the bottom of the board away from the fence. Also, the top edge can be seen and corrections made as necessary but the bottom edge is hidden.
  • Cut about 4” per minute.
